St Andrews researchers funded for major new Greenland study
St Andrews Glaciology members Tom Cowton and Doug Benn are part of an international team funded by the UK’s Advanced Research and Innovation Agency (ARIA) to undertake an major new study into the interactions between the Greenland Ice Sheet and the ocean.
GRAIL (Greenland-Atlantic Interaction and Early Warning) is a pioneering science project that ultimately aims to develop an early warning system for a critical climate tipping point: the potential disruption of North Atlantic ocean currents due to accelerating Greenland ice melt.
This ambitious project brings together cutting-edge technology, field observations, modelling and international expertise to monitor, understand and predict one of the most consequential climate system interactions on our planet.
